  19. <p>     Imelda Marcos will now have to find her shoe money
  20. somewhere else. She suffered a stinging--and costly--legal
  21. setback last week, when the Swiss Supreme Court cleared the way
  22. for the return to the Philippines of $350 million deposited in
  23. Swiss banks by her husband, former President Ferdinand Marcos.
  24. The court ruled that the money, which has been frozen in
  25. several banks since the Marcoses fled Manila in February 1986,
  26. would be returned to the country if a Philippine criminal court
  27. issued a legally binding verdict against the couple.

  29. <p>     President Corazon Aquino hailed the ruling as a "victory
  30. for the people." Neither Marcos, who died in exile in September
  31. 1989, nor his widow has ever been charged with a criminal
  32. offense in the Philippines, but prosecutors expressed confidence
  33. that the problem could be sidestepped by rulings in the civil
  34. suits filed against the Marcoses.
